Helpful Books for Parents, Addiction or Recovery

Please find below some Books that Holistic Interventionist recommends using to help with your recovery. You don't have to read them all - just have a look and see what takes your fancy.
In this section, we've broken down the recommended reading into For parents, For addiction recovery which includes relatable addiction journeys and additional helpful books.

For Parents

Running a family often comes with quite a lot of its own challenges. This is heightened even more if your child is anywhere on the spectrum as you have to understand them in a different way and manage your own emotional state.

To help with this we have 2 books:

Not what I expected by Rita Eichenstein

Hunter and farmers world by Thom Hartmann, Michael Popkin

This next one is on interpersonal relationships - this could be on a personal level but is also fantastic if your child is suffering any sort of trauma and you're looking for a relatable way on how to communicate with them on a very human level.

Darkness to the light of hope. Jennifer Tracy

If you grew up in an alcoholic home, drink in front of your children or have a child who has problems with substance use then both of these are highly recommended for you. Not just at understanding the potential damage but learning to look after yourself as well.

Adult Children of Alcoholics by Janet G. Woititz

Don't Let Your Kids Kill You by Charles Rubin

For Addiction Recovery

We may not all have the time to read a full book, sometimes you just want to know what you can do right away. Here we've found two books which do just that. Though they have loads of insightful tips, they are broken down into sections and give you advice for a specific scenario:

Sometimes knowing that you're not the only one who is doing this journey helps. For you, we've found a number of relatable human addiction journey books which come from multiple perspectives and types of addiction.

I love you more. Um, By a friend like Cohen - family perspective

Remembering the things I drank to forget - memoir - alcohol

permanent midnight - memoir - opiate

Not sure if any of the above take your fancy? Well, that's why we have these extra books which aren't specific to the above but can still be super helpful. We know everyone takes a different path to understand themselves, and therefore at Holistic interventionist, we aim to make our services as inclusive as possible - see some of our choices here:
